Rounders: A fun and sociable workout

Here at KBPT, we want our clients to enjoy exercising. And what could be more fun than a game of rounders and a picnic with your mates in one of London’s beautiful parks? So, grab your bat and ball and get ready to scream “Rounder! Rounder! Rounder!’ like you did at school. Here are a few things you should know…

1. You don’t need a lot of equipment

All you need is a wooden, aluminium or plastic rounders bat, a rounders ball and four posts (or jumpers) that you set out in a diamond shape at the park. It’s a good idea to wear trainers and sports kit for the game and you might like to wear similar colours to your team mates. You can find a range of rounders equipment on the Rounders England website.

2. It’s good for you

When you play rounders, you have to strike a ball, run, bowl and catch – all of which have benefits for your coordination, agility, flexibility, strength and stamina. You also have to concentrate, strategise and work as a team. And don’t forget the mental health benefits of a team sport like rounders. Regular exercise is known to have a positive impact on our wellbeing but, when you’re doing it with other people, it’s even more beneficial. Check out this article on the Sport England website.

3. The rules are simple

You’ll need two teams of between 6 and 15 players each (but no more than nine players are allowed are on the field at the same time). One team bats while the other team fields and bowls. The batter hits the ball then runs to as many posts as possible before the ball touches the post they are running for. If they reach the fourth post in one hit, they score a Rounder. Games are usually played over two innings. You can find the full rules on the Rounders England website.

4. It’s easy to join a local team

If you’d like to play rounders regularly and more competitively, why not join a local team? GO Mammoth organises London’s biggest social rounders leagues each summer (in Battersea Park, Canada Water, Clapham Common, Regents Park and Wandsworth Common) and offers all the equipment you need as well as qualified umpires. Or why not get your colleagues together for a weekly game after work? A little bit of friendly rivalry never hurt anyone…
