Why being fit and healthy is more important than ever.

The parks are full of people walking, running, doing yoga, and using the goalposts for pull-ups. Bike sales in the UK have doubled. Millions are turning to YouTube and Instagram for their daily workouts. It’s clear that the threat of coronavirus (COVID-19) – combined with having more time at home and the warm weather – has fuelled a fitness boom.

And that’s a good thing because being fit and healthy could help to protect you from getting severely ill from the virus. For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) is a mild illness but the risk of serious illness is higher if you have certain underlying health conditions. These include diabetes, heart disease and obesity. So, how can you help to reduce your risk of developing a severe illness if you do get coronavirus? Here are three suggestions.

1. Follow the official advice
The best way to stop coronavirus spreading is to avoid close contact with anyone you don’t live with and to wash your hands regularly. If you or anyone else in your household has symptoms, you should get tested and self-isolate. If you have diabetes or heart disease, read the additional guidance on the Diabetes UK and British Heart Foundation websites.

2. Boost your immune system
Your immune system protects your body against infection and disease. To strengthen it, focus on eating healthily, reducing stress, and getting enough sleep. Avoid smoking and, if you drink alcohol, do it in moderation. Increase your vitamin D levels by spending time outside or taking a vitamin D supplement. Exercising regularly can also have a positive impact on your immune system – even short workouts can help to fight off infection.

3. Lower your Body Mass Index (BMI)
Research indicates that obesity makes people more vulnerable to COVID-19. Use this BMI calculator to find out if you’re a healthy weight for your height. If you need to lose weight, combine a healthy, balanced diet (think fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein) with regular exercise, including aerobic, cardio, and strength training activities.
